The House of the Devil

If you follow my blog you know I’m all about those precious independent small budget gems.

The House of the Devil is a 2009 american horror movie written and directed by the young promising director Ti West, staring Jocelin Donahue.

This movie takes place during the 70s and it does a good job capturing the feeling from that era, which surely will bring some nostalgia for some people.

Creepy_Shot_House_of_the_devilThis movie does not rely on scare jumps, The House of the Devil is all about suspense, tension, and menacing atmosphere. You don’t fear what you are seeing, you fear what will come. It’s all about anticipation.

The plot is super simple and the action burns very slowly throughout most of the movie, leaving you enough time to sit back and delight with the production quality. Shots are meticulously well framed and the lighting is beautifully sinister. Jocelin Donahue is pretty good too, and we get a ton of alone time with her character. Overall it is well produced and directed.

The House of the Devil is a low budget movie that puts most Hollywood horror “blockbusters” to shame.

Pale Moon – Incompatible add-ons

Pale Moon Icon

My very first post was about the awesome browser Pale Moon.
You can read the article here.

I received some complains from users who found a lot of incompatibilities when installing add-ons from Firefox.
Even though Pale Moon shares code with Firefox it is in most part a different animal, and during the last years it has become clear they are taking a completely different direction from all the other browser companies, and this includes Mozilla.
Long story short, do not expect all Firefox’s add-ons to work on Pale Moon. But, as a great man once said, “Never despair.”

In the official website you will find a list of the most requested add-ons, organized by incompatibilities, fixes, and workarounds.
Here is the link to the page: https://addons.palemoon.org/incompatible/

Before install any add-on make sure to check this page first and see what’s what.
It is clear that Pale Moon is not aimed for the common internet user. This browser requires a little bit of IT cleverness to configure, but that’s it, just a little bit of IT cleverness.

Some geeks prefer their software to be small, light, fast, and efficient.
If you still use Winamp then Pale Moon is the browser for you.

Best e-cigarette for beginners

Joyetech-eGo-AIO

Joyetech AIO

Device
In my opinion the best device for a beginner is probably the Joyetech AIO.
Joyetech is one of the oldest brands, and they are known for quality and safety. Youtube is full of reviews for this model. It is a simple and clever ecig. You can check the official website here.

Coils
A coil is what vaporizes the e-liquid, and it should be replaced every two weeks or so. I replace mine every week.
This device uses the Cubis BF-SS316 coils. If you are a smoker you will probably enjoy them at 0,6ohms or 1,0ohms. You can check them here.
You can also use the rebuildable coil Cubis BF-RBA. Rebuilding your own coils can improve performance and vapor quality for a lower price, but brings the risk of short-circuiting your device if not done properly. Do an intensive research before you try it. You can check them here.

E-liquid
The liquid you vaporize is called e-liquid, and tobacco is a hard flavor to replicate if not impossible, so don’t expect to fall in love with the first e-liquid you try.
E-liquids taste different from person to person.
The ones I liked the most were: Halo Tribeca, L’Absolu 1776, Liqua RY4 and Liqua French Pipe Tobacco. As far as nicotine goes I recommend you something between 6mg and 12mg. Any more and you risk having a nicotine overdose. I am now at 1.2mg and dropping.

Tip about e-liquids
When you buy a e-liquid, before vaping it, you should let it breathe and steep.
First shake it like crazy, then open the flask completely and leave it open for 30 minutes, after that close it, shake it again, and leave it in a dark place for one night. This process helps remove the alcohol-like smell and brings up the flavor. With Halo liquids you might need to repeat this process a couple more times.

Personally I prefer to do my own e-liquids. This requires a learning curve, and also a lot of patience. Nevertheless, doing your own e-liquids and rebuilding your own coils really bring down the costs and make vaping a very cheap alternative to tobacco.

If you have any question leave it bellow, or go to your local vaping shop and inform yourself. Surely any vaper will be eager to help you out.

How did I stop smoking

How did I stop smoking?
By accident. Working on the computer at night I used to smoke cigarette after cigarette, waking up in the morning feeling pretty sick.
I decided to try a vaporizer, a device commonly known as electronic cigarette, and after a couple of days tobacco started to taste bad, so I dropped it completely.

Are vaporizers good for your health? Is it less harmful than tobacco? Or is it worse?
Vaping is not good for your health. Vaping is less harmful then tobacco in the short run. Doctors still do not know if there are long-term effects. Some e-liquids come with diacetyl which is bad for your health, but still, tobacco has far more diacetyl. Some people say it destroys your teeth, but that’s because vaping dries your mouth, and a dry mouth is more vulnerable to bacteria. The solution? Drink more water.

What effects did I experienced?
Well, first came the cough and the dry mouth. That is normal for a beginner. Now I wake up feeling well rested, I can run for longer periods of time, and some food and beverages taste better. Oh, and no cough what so ever, actually I haven’t got sick anymore since I started vaping. Also, tobacco smells terribly bad now, but I do find myself craving cigarettes every once in a while.

How can you start vaping?
The biggest problem for a smoker who wants to try a vaporizer is to find a good device.
The market is overflowing with brands and devices of all kinds and shapes. The world of electronic cigarettes are full of weird terms like ohms, resistance, coils, VG, PG, mouth-to-lung, nicotine mg, and so on. It is a nightmare! So, because I like you very much, in the next article I’m going to give you some tips and recommendations.

Stay tuned 🙂

How to Block Windows Telemetry

Spybot Antibeacon

As you know Windows 10 has serious privacy issues.
You can disable most of the spying options in the Control Panel, but it does not mean you are fully protected, because on the background there is something called Telemetry.
Windows’ Telemetry is basically a bunch of stuff running in your computer specificity design to gather has much information as possible about the user.
Luckily there is a small piece of software designed to block this, it is called Spybot Anti-Beacon.
It’s pretty straight forward, just install it, check all the boxes, click Immunize, and reboot your computer.
You can download it here, and say goodbye to Windows’ Telemetry.

Trip to Lisbon – Day 4

Day 4

After a terrible night and a even worst morning I decided to finally do some sightseeing in Lisbon itself. The plan was to walk those old streets up to the castle, then walk everything down to the river, and stop by any landmark on the way.

Lisbon Castle

São Jorge Castle, Lisbon

My head felt like it was holding a wardrobe and all my muscles hurt, except my feet, because I could not feel them. I entered a cafeteria, ordered an espresso and a pastel the nata, and couldn’t help but notice a foreign girl across the room having the exact same thing. “In Rome be Roman” I thought to myself.

Pastel de nata

The breakfast of champions

That breakfast made me feel better but I was not quite there, so half the way to the castle I had to make another stop, this time for a beer. And you know what? That beer really hit the spot. I felt like Super Mario after eating a star. I was sitting outside having god’s drink when I saw that same foreign girl walking up the street. She passed by and I discretely checked her rear attributes by fully turning me head around. When I turned back again I saw the waiter smiling at me, nodding, like he was saying “Yeap, I saw that too.” I picked my stuff and continued my journey, but not before having another beer. Another sweet cold beer.

Super Mario's Star

Super Mario star

I got to be honest, my orientation skills are not my best quality, and on my way to the castle I got lost, finding myself on a viewpoint square I had been before. I could see the castle across the valley, which meant I would only have to walk everything down and up again. Luckily there was a bar with an esplanade and a funny band playing outside. So I stayed there a little bit, enjoying the sun, the view, the band, and another Super Mario star.

I hit the road and as I was going down I saw that foreign girl again, walking up the street. “This is odd”, I thought to myself. So, after going all the streets down and up again, I lost myself. Again. This time finding myself on an empty street. Seriously, an empty street right in the middle of Lisbon, and no one in sight to ask for directions. I was wondering when exactly had I passed the dimensional portal, when I saw her yet again. That very same foreigner girl I’ve been encountering all day was walking up the road straight in my direction, and I thought to myself “My God, she walked through the dimensional portal too!” Her hazel hair danced with the wind, and beneath I saw her light coloured eyes looking straight at me. She recognised me. I waited for her to get close, and asked her what any other guy would ask in the same situation: “Are you following me?”

Luckily she had a good sense of humour, and we ended up seeing the castle together. The place was huge, and lordly, totally worth those long kilometres I did on foot. There are endless corridors on the walls, cannons, old ruins, and a nice garden where you can find one of the most beautiful view of Lisbon. Highly recommended.

I wished I had powder with me

What was the most important thing I learned that day? If you decide to visit Lisbon on foot, always carry sunscreen, otherwise you will look like a lobster at the end of the day.

Trip to Lisbon – Day 3

I had already written everything about my trip to Lisbon, but somehow WordPress managed to lost my articles. Some might say it was my fault, but I always prefer to blame the equipment. So here I find myself writing it all over again.

Day 3

On day 3 we went to Cascais. It’s a sort of Beverly Hills for people who live in Lisbon.Cascais

Here is what you can expect from Cascais: palm trees, sun, palm trees, beach, palm trees, sea breeze, palm trees, boats, palm trees, expensive cars, palm trees, topless girls, and once in a while you might encounter a couple of palm trees.

.
The designated rally driver toke us through Cabo da Rocathe beautiful landscape of Sintra on the way to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point in continental Europe. It’s a bit windy there. And after that we stopped by Ericeira, a well known place among the surfing community. There we had a taste of hard life, with some couches and beers. Mmmmmmm sweet cold beers.

At night we decided to explore the night life in the capital, by going up and down the narrow streets of Bairro Alto. Never thought getting drunk could be so exhausting.
